UNIVERSITY OF GHANA
March 2010 Annual Report
i
PREFACE
This Report satisfies a statutory requirement of the Vice-Chancellor to document annually the work of the University
for Congregation. By all standards, the 2008/2009 academic year can be described as a very successful one.
From the reports of the various faculties you will note that inspite of the heavy teaching loads, members of faculty
continue to be involved in research projects, in collaboration with both local and foreign partners. The Report cites
over 1,300 research projects and 1,070 publications and artistic productions. These include about forty on-going
projects/grants with a total budget of 1.5 million US dollars, and 500,000 Euros under the Research Unit of the School
of Research and Graduate Studies which manages the Academic Prize Fund and Teaching and Learning Innovation
Fund (TALIF).
In addition to revision of existing courses, many new academic programmes especially at the post-graduate level, were
approved by the Academic Board. In the humanities and law, Masters level courses are in Clinical Neuro Psychology,
in Public Affairs, in Alternative Dispute Resolution, in Human Rights and Administration, in Oil and Gas Law, Oil and
Gas Production Systems.
The Business School has introduced the Master of Philosophy in Risk Management and Insurance, Master of Science
in Development Finance, and the PhD in Finance degrees.
There is also a major transformation in the Sciences in response to national requirements. These are new courses and
programmes in Engineering Geology, in Petroleum Geoscience, in Mineral Exploration and Groundwater Resources
Management, in addition to Biological Science, Nuclear Earth Sciences and Computational Nuclear Sciences and
Engineering and Biotechnology. Two professional schools – Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy have commenced
academic work.
Our ICT landscape is undergoing enhancement. The ICT-based Distance Education Project which was formally
launched by the Honourable Minister of Education in December last year has an overall objective of improving the
quality of teaching, learning and research through the introduction of an e-learning system.
There are numerous physical development projects in progress on all our campuses. Some of these that have recently
been completed or are close to completion, are the extensions to the Balme Library, Phase I of the Sports Complex, the
Alumni Offices, Physics Laboratory, the Greenhouses for agricultural research and the Central Science Laboratories.
Several teaching laboratories in the Science Faculty and School of Agriculture have also been refurbished and provided
with state-of-the-art equipment for student practicals.
This being the last Report of my 4-year tenure as Vice-Chancellor, I would like to take this opportunity to express
appreciation to all members of the University Council (past and present), Provosts, Deans, Directors, Heads of
Department and Units, Heads of Hall, members of all the Boards and Committees of the University and indeed all our
staff and students for their cooperation and assistance during my term of office. Together we have worked towards
meeting the strategic goals of the University, and towards ensuring the quality of the teaching and research that goes
on here.
I am also thankful for the support that we have received from our stakeholders: the government and the good people
of Ghana, our alumni, our corporate and individual friends, and our sister affiliated institutions.
Professor Clifford Nii Boi Tagoe
Vice-Chancellor
