Playstation Sixaxis Manual Controller Guide - page 1
PS3 SIXAXIS Controller Mod Parts Needed Precision screwdriver (#1 works good) Soldering Iron and Solder (the smaller the tip the better) Wire (given) Electrical Tape LED (given) Resistor (given) Controller Disassembly Note – I highly recommend taking the controller apart once slowly and putting it back together before performing the mod. This will give you good practice in putting the controller back together and understanding where all the parts go before you attempt the mod. 1) Remove the 5 screws holding the casings together.

2) Pry open the top part of the controller slightly with your fingers. Then push the top part of the casing (ie side with buttons on it) towards the top of the controller (ie towards the L1/R1 buttons). At the same time push the bottom part of the casing towards the bottom of the controller. In other words you’re basically shifting the controller apart. The manual has a diagram in the battery replacement section but it sucks – I hope the wording above helps a bit. The bottom part of the controller will then pop open. 3) You can now pull the two pieces apart. Note that there are sliding pieces in between the L1/L2 buttons and also in between the R1/R2 buttons. These slide open to allow the triggers to disengage from the casing.

4) Remove the one screw holding the PCB to the casing. 5) Remove the PCB and put the 2 plastic casings aside.

6) Remove the battery from PCB. 7) Remove the analog stick plastic knobs by pulling straight up. Bend the upper PCB button foil back to expose the main PCB. Some people remove this from the PCB, if you have trouble, remove it, if not, leave it there.

8) You can now see the LED pad in the middle, pin 4 of the power connector for the 2.8V above it and hole #5 for the ground point to the right. The soldering will be done on these two points. Time to start soldering. LED Install 1) Bend the leads of the lead as shown below. Remember which leg of the LED is longer. Note that there is insulation over the leads of the LED and resistor, which is not necessary, as we show you later on. You can also use electrical tape for the same purpose.

2) Solder the resistor to the positive/longer leg of the LED 3) Wrap electrical tape or use heat shrink to insulate the connection.

4) Now, we need to solder the resistor to the box in the center of the board. You need to solder it to the leg where the red wire is coming in on the opposite side. Be very precise and make sure there is no solder touching any other legs of the box. 4) Solder a short (maybe 2.5”) piece of wire to the negative/shorter leg of the LED. You will need to strip off both ends of the wire so that the solder can make contact. Take the other end of the wire and stick it into the #5 (ground hole). Once you have put it in, solder underneath and on top of the #5 hole to make sure that the wire stays put. The tighter the wire is to the center controller, the lesser chance that you will have any future problems.

5) Make sure the LED is working correctly by testing it with a USB connection and be sure that it is facing upward where it says “LED 5” in the middle of the board. Now you want to begin putting your controller back together. Controller Re-assembly I’m not going to go step by step since the assembly is reverse of disassembly. Instead I’ll just provide some tips to help out. 1) Ensure all the pieces of the top chassis are in place before placing the PCB down into it (PS button, LED deflector, etc…) 2) Once the PCB is in place and the one screw is put back in, align the L2 and R2 buttons back into place (they slide). It’s actually easier to remove the L1 and R1 buttons first, position the L2 and R2 buttons properly and then place the L1 and R1 buttons back in place. 3) There’s a little black plastic piece that may fall out when you’re taking the controller apart. No worries, it goes onto the switch right by the battery near the top of the controller (SW4). 4) When placing the bottom chassis onto the top chassis, slide the little plastic pieces that go in between the L1 and L2 buttons as well as the R1 and R2 buttons out near the end and then allow the L2 and R2 triggers to be pushed through. Then slide the sliders back in snug.
